Resources I use for Afrikaans
I have reached quite a good level already and don’t focus on textbooks that much anymore. I like listening to Afrikaans radio and reading books (that I order straight from South Africa). It is very difficult to find resources for Afrikaans at an intermediate to advanced level, so I don’t have many to mention. Let’s have a look:
- Teach Yourself Afrikaans - you can always count on TY if you need a good resource for your next language learning project. I like its approach very much and they have the audio available for free on the website. What more do you want ... This is my main resource for Afrikaans
- Colloquial Afrikaans - along with TY my go-to resource whenever I start learning a new language.
- Italki - I am a big fan of speaking as soon as you can in the learning process and I regularly book a conversation lesson with my teacher Marilyn.
- Grammatica van het Afrikaans - an overview aimed at Dutch natives, that focuses on the differences between the 2 languages.
- Online course University of the Free State, Gesellig Afrikaans - I was going to take the course, but for a number of reasons, I didn't in the end. It is in the back of my mind though, maybe one day ...
- A grammar of Afrikaans (Donaldson) - a friend of mine had a nice surprise when he heard I was studying Afrikaans. He gave me this grammar, thank you, Alexander! I haven't used it yet, but I will as soon as TY is finished.
- Linguaphone - Alexander also gave me this book, needless to say I am very happy with that. When I was looking into Afrikaans resources, I came across this course (supposedly one of the best). Again, after TY, I will dive into this one!
